Job Title: Trailer Technician
Summary:
The Trailer Technician is responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, maintaining, and repairing 18-wheeler trailers to ensure safe and efficient operation. This includes van and refrigerated trailers, braking systems, suspension, electrical wiring, flooring, doors, roof structures, landing gear, and related components. The Trailer Technician will perform scheduled and unscheduled services, troubleshoot reported problems, make necessary repairs, and assist with quality control of company-owned and leased trailers.
Duties/Responsibilities:
Under minimal supervision, the Trailer Technician will be responsible for the following:
- Assess trailers, vehicles, and/or machinery to accurately diagnose and repair issues.
- Inspect trailers and run diagnostic tests to identify functionality problems.
- Perform maintenance functions on van and refrigerated trailers, including brake systems.
- Diagnose and repair trailer brake systems, suspension, axles, hubs, and bearings.
- Inspect, repair, or replace trailer lighting, electrical wiring, and connectors.
- Service and repair trailer doors, flooring, side panels, roof structures, and landing gear.
- Troubleshoot reported problems and resolve them in a timely manner.
- Perform daily yard checks to validate and reconcile work performed on prior shift and communicate findings to operations regarding asset availability.
- Verify work orders within the computerized maintenance system, reconcile parts usage, and confirm completeness of work orders.
- Maintain an accurate log of all inspections, repairs, and services performed.
- Provide preventative maintenance program recommendations.
- Identify assets that are out of service and record their location.
- Weld, cut, and fabricate metal parts for trailer repair as needed.
- Maintain and clean shop equipment and tools to ensure they remain in safe, usable condition.
- Assist with maintaining shop inventory and ordering parts as needed.
- Follow all company safety policies and regulatory requirements (DOT, FMCSA, OSHA).
- Maintain a clean and organized work area.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Proven experience as a Trailer or Maintenance Technician (or similar role).
- Strong knowledge of diesel systems, trailer components, and repair practices.
- Proficiency in diagnosing and repairing brakes, suspension, refrigeration, and electrical systems.
- Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, diagrams, and schematics.
- Welding and metal fabrication skills are preferred.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Strong communication skills for reporting and documentation.
- Commitment to safety and adherence to regulatory standards.
- Must be able to provide own set of basic hand tools.
Education and Experience:
- 1–3 years of experience in trailer maintenance and repair preferred.
- Vocational training or schooling in mechanics, welding, or diesel technology a plus.
- Familiarity with DOT and FMCSA requirements.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and perform rigorous physical tasks.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, and work in various positions for extended periods.
- Adequate vision and hearing to safely perform inspections and repairs.
Work Environment:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts, tools, fumes, airborne particles, and vibration. The noise level in the work environment can be loud.
