Summary: As a Transportation Planner, you will be responsible for coordinating and optimizing transportation activities to ensure efficient movement of goods and services. This role involves route planning, load optimization, and collaborating with various stakeholders to achieve cost-effective and timely transportation solutions. The Transportation Planner plays a crucial role in enhancing logistics efficiency, reducing transportation costs, and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement optimal transportation routes based on customer requirements, traffic conditions, and cost factors. Utilize transportation management software (TMS) to plan and adjust routes as needed.
- Maximize truck utilization by planning efficient load configurations and consolidating shipments where possible, reducing empty miles and transportation costs.
- Schedule shipments and coordinate with dispatchers, drivers, and external carriers to ensure timely pickups and deliveries.
- Analyze transportation data and KPIs to identify trends, inefficiencies, and areas for improvement. Generate daily, weekly, and monthly performance reports for senior management review.
- Ensure compliance with Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations, including hours of service (HOS), vehicle maintenance, and safety protocols. Keep updated on changes in transportation laws and regulations.
- Collaborate with external carriers and vendors, negotiating rates and service agreements to secure favorable terms and maintain quality standards.
- Act as a liaison between customers and the transportation team, providing timely updates on shipment status and resolving any service issues.
- Address transportation-related issues such as delays, vehicle breakdowns, and route changes. Implement contingency plans to minimize disruptions and maintain service levels.
- Maintain accurate records of transportation activities, including bills of lading, shipping manifests, and route plans. Ensure data is correctly entered into the TMS and other relevant systems.
- Lead initiatives to streamline transportation processes, implement best practices, and leverage new technologies for operational efficiency.
- Develop and implement safety procedures to mitigate risks associated with transportation operations. Conduct regular audits and safety reviews.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Proficiency in transportation management systems (TMS) and route optimization software.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret transportation data and make data-driven decisions.
- Excellent communication and negotiation skills for interacting with vendors, customers, and internal teams.
- Strong organizational and multitasking abilities, with a focus on efficiency and cost reduction.
- Knowledge of DOT regulations and other compliance standards.
- Proficiency in MS Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook) for reporting and analysis.
- Bilingual abilities (Spanish or other languages) are a plus.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Transportation, Logistics, Business Administration, or a related field.
- 3-5 years of experience in transportation planning, logistics, or a related role.
- Experience with transportation management systems and route optimization tools is highly desirable.
Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds occasionally.
Work Environment:
- Primarily an office setting with minimal exposure to adverse environmental conditions.
- Occasional travel may be required for vendor meetings or site visits.
- Work schedule Friday, Saturday and Sunday 6:00 pm to 6:00 am
- Standard schedule is 36 hours per week. Compensation is based on a 40-hour work week, reflecting our commitment to work-life balance.
